What Should You Ask a Paving Contractor Before Starting a Project?

What Should You Ask a Paving Contractor Before Starting a Project?

Are You Considering a Paving Project?

A professional paving project completed by a Philadelphia paving contractor can add substantially to the value and appeal of your home or business. Additionally, repairing cracks and potholes adds to the safety of your property by eliminating trip-and-fall hazards.

Understanding what a paving project requires helps to ensure a smooth process and a satisfying, long-lasting result. What should you know before you begin a paving project? When will you need the expertise and services a Delaware Valley paving contractor provides?

A paving project can rapidly become a huge aggravation if you don’t adequately plan and organize it. The first steps are defining your budget, goals, and timeline. Putting everything about the project in writing can help you meet your timeline and get the desired results.

What Will Your Paving Project Entail? What is Its Scope?

Is your paving project a resurfacing job, a new installation, or a repair project? A residence or a business? Each paving project requires a unique approach and expertise, and a professional Philadelphia paving contractor will have experience with every kind of paving project.

You will need to define your project’s goals. Will the area you are paving be a driveway, sidewalk, patio, or parking lot? How will the paved area function, and how do you want it to look? Is your paving project intended to boost your property’s value on the real estate market?

If there is existing pavement, you must evaluate it for deterioration, drainage issues, and structural damage. You may need a paving contractor’s advice. You may also have to remove old pavement and make some repairs before you begin your paving project.

What Does Site Preparation Entail?

Preparing a paving site usually begins with an excavation of the area. Before you excavate, contact your utility providers to identify and mark their underground lines to prevent any utility damage. Then take these steps:

  • Determining and implementing drainage solutions: You must prevent water from accumulating and damaging your new pavement.
  • Compacting the soil: By removing air pockets from the soil and preventing additional settling in the future, you create a solid, secure foundation for your new pavement.
  • Installing a base layer: You should spread and compact a base layer of gravel and crushed aggregate to give your new pavement additional support and stability.

What Paving Materials Should You Select?

When you select paving materials, you will have several options: asphalt, natural stone, concrete, brick, and gravel, for example. Your choice should be determined by each option’s look, cost, durability, and suitability for the project and the local climate.

If your paving project is a driveway, patio, or pool area, choose a permeable option (like pavers or permeable concrete) that prevents water from accumulating and allows for proper drainage.

What Local Regulations Apply?

Before you start a paving project, become familiar with the local permitting requirements, zoning laws, building codes, and environmental regulations for paving projects. Depending on your location and the type of paving project, you may have to obtain permits and pass inspections.

A professional paving contractor should know the applicable local regulations and have experience obtaining the required permits and passing the required inspections.

What Will Your Paving Project Cost?

You can easily spend more than you expected to spend on a paving project. You need to plan for hidden costs and unforeseen expenses. Calculate a flexible and realistic budget. Be prepared for whatever obstacles may arise.

When you meet with paving contractors, discuss your project’s timeline and any factors that may delay it, such as poor weather conditions or permitting delays. Delays and setbacks are likely. In some locations, you may have to delay your project until the snowfall or the rainy season ends.

What Other Preparations Are Required?

If you are paving at your business or residential rental property, inform tenants, customers, employees, and other visitors in advance about the project, the timeline, and the potential disruptions to everyday routines.

Plan for any necessary utility or service interruptions – trash collection or electrical power, for example. You may need to relocate equipment, vehicles, or personal items like patio furniture before your paving project begins.

Understanding and addressing these issues before you launch a paving project will help you make informed choices during the process and help to ensure an outcome that meets your expectations and needs.

How Do You Choose a Paving Contractor?

Before you begin a paving project, you should ask a paving contractor about what the project may entail, how the site should be prepared, and which paving materials you should use. But “which paving contractor should you hire?” is a question you will have to answer for yourself.

You may have to do some research. The first step is identifying reputable paving contractors in your area who have experience with projects like yours. Speak with several contractors, read their online reviews, and confirm their professional affiliations.

Eliminate any contractors who are not licensed, bonded, and insured. Then request detailed, written estimates. Compare the cost of labor and materials, the projected timeline, and the warranty information.

When you decide on a paving project, establish a budget, and choose a contractor, take your time and do your research. Choose a Delaware Valley paving contractor who communicates clearly and demonstrates professionalism. The first call you make should be to Hauser Contractors.

First let me say I do all the work on my house because I don't trust people to do the job correct. With that said my roof was leaking working on ladders (heights) is not for me. I called three roofers two gave me a estimate without putting a ladder up. 😂 One estimate was for a new roof.. which I didn't need. Bill came twice (with a ladder) >because of weather and also he wanted to get the correct plan together to fix the issue causing the leaks. Bill is very easy to communicate , also does what he says he is gonna do. After the job was done bill still texted me the next two times it rained, To check in on the roof and make sure I was happy. He cares about his work. I highly recommend bill, Thanks henry

Five-Star Basement Remodel: I highly recommend this team for any home renovation. They were professional, friendly, and maintained a clean workspace throughout the entire project. The quality of work is exceptional, especially considering the reasonable pricing. They stayed exactly on budget and finished the job ahead of schedule. If you want a high-end look without the stress or the inflated price tag, look no further!

Thanks again for all your hard work Bill. You’ve created a safe space for my parents on the ground floor and significantly reduced their fall risk. In the process a 5th bedroom and full bathroom were added to the footprint. Much appreciate the sweat that went into it. It wasn’t easy, but you came up with a plan that everyone liked, especially for the bathroom. Can’t really tell there was any work done, feels like it was always like this. Your craftsmanship is par excellence. Much appreciated! Peace

Bill is a godsend. After a series of unfortunate contractor mishaps, the only bathroom in my home was unfinished and I was beyond disenchanted. He came in and not only finished the job, but did so with the care, attention to detail, and professionalism I'd hoped to encounter earlier in my bathroom remodeling process. With a quick wit, he asked, "Why didn't you call me first?😊." Now, without any hesitation...Bill will be my first call for ANY home project moving forward. Bill is the GC you need. He is responsive/ timely, his work is high quality, and his fee is very reasonable. Don't start any project without him and his team. **Main Services: Plumbing, fixture installation (toilet, vanity, sink faucet, cabinet, rod, fixed incorrect tub spout), wall refacing/paint, custom trim), electrical (light installation).

Billy and his team did a tremendous job on our roof. We had a difficult situation that required significant work to entirely replace the roof and add support beams throughout the house. We’ve had no issues in three years now. Billy even came out during a terrible rain storm to make sure the tarps were on correctly. Highly recommend.
