What Are the Best Fencing Materials for Long-Term Durability and Security?

How Do You Choose the Right Fencing Materials for Your Needs?

According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), installing a fence can help you increase your curb appeal and make your home more saleable. The right fence can also boost your privacy, expand the usability of your outdoor spaces for your family and pets, and safeguard your property from intrusion. Business owners can also reap the security and aesthetic benefits of a high-quality fence.

Durable, visually appealing fencing can be a substantial investment, so it is vital to do your research to ensure the fence will meet your needs and stand the test of time. The best fencing materials should withstand various weather conditions, provide adequate security, and require minimal maintenance. The fencing professionals at Hauser Contractors have extensive experience installing fencing for homes and commercial properties throughout the Delaware Valley. We offer a wide variety of quality fencing materials and can help you determine the best options for your goals, style, and budget.

Vinyl: The Low-Maintenance Champion

Vinyl fencing has emerged as a popular option for homeowners seeking durability and low maintenance. This material is particularly well-suited for Pennsylvania’s climate, which experiences both hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Vinyl fences can often last as long as 30 years with minimal upkeep, making them an enduring choice.

A key advantage of vinyl fencing is its resistance to moisture, which is crucial in areas that experience heavy rainfall or snowfall. Unlike wood, vinyl does not rot, attract pests, or suffer from moisture damage. Advancements in vinyl fencing technology have addressed previous concerns about fading and warping. New UV-resistant coatings help prevent discoloration and structural changes due to prolonged sun exposure.

For homeowners looking for security, vinyl fencing offers an additional layer of protection. The material is difficult to break or climb, enhancing the overall safety of the property. Its smooth surface and lack of footholds make it challenging for potential intruders to scale.

Steel: Unmatched Strength and Longevity

For those prioritizing maximum security and durability, steel fencing is the ultimate choice. In Pennsylvania’s variable climate, galvanized steel has become increasingly popular due to its superior rust resistance. It can endure heavy snow loads in winter and resist damage from fallen branches during summer storms. Steel fencing also maintains its form during any weather condition, rarely affected by the expansion and contraction of the ground during freezing temperatures.

While steel fencing often has higher purchase and installation costs, it can last over 30 years with little upkeep, providing an excellent long-term investment. Its incredible strength also offers the highest level of security among fencing materials, making it suitable for both residential and commercial properties.

Aluminum: Elegance Meets Durability

Aluminum fencing has recently gained popularity, offering a perfect blend of strength and style. One of the best features of aluminum fencing is its resistance to rust and corrosion. This quality makes it ideal for areas with high humidity or heavy rainfall. Pennsylvania’s humid summers and wet springs can be harsh on some fencing materials. Aluminum’s natural resistance to these conditions ensures that it maintains its structural integrity and appearance with minimal maintenance.

Aluminum fencing provides a strong barrier while adding aesthetic value to the property. Many colors are available so homeowners can complement their home’s style. Its strength and durability make it an effective deterrent against intruders, while its elegant appearance enhances the overall look of any home.

Wood: Classic Appeal

Wood fencing remains a popular material thanks to its natural beauty and versatility. However, when considering wood fencing in Pennsylvania, choosing the right type of wood and taking proper maintenance measures is crucial. Redwood and cedar are excellent choices due to their natural resistance to insect infestations and decay. These woods can handle the state’s humid summers and wet springs better than some other wood varieties. Pressure-treated pine is another option, as it’s treated to withstand moisture and resist rot and insect damage.

Although wood fencing can last up to 20 years with proper care, it does require more upkeep than other materials. Regular staining or painting is necessary to safeguard the wood from moisture damage, which is particularly important given the state’s significant annual rainfall and snowfall.

Composite: Eco-Friendly Durability

Composite fencing, made from a mixture of recycled wood and plastic, offers an eco-friendly option that combines the look of wood with increased durability. Composite fencing can last over 25 years, making it a long-lasting option for homeowners. Composite fencing requires very little maintenance, needing only occasional cleaning to keep it looking new.

From a security standpoint, composite fencing’s thick panels offer high resistance to break-ins. This feature, combined with its durability and low maintenance requirements, makes it an excellent choice for homeowners seeking both protection and longevity.

Chain-Link: Budget-Friendly and Weather-Resistant

While not always the most aesthetically pleasing option, chain-link fencing offers unparalleled durability and weather resistance at a budget-friendly price. It can be an excellent choice for large properties or those prioritizing function over form. Galvanized or vinyl-coated chain-link fences are highly resistant to rust and corrosion and can withstand heavy rain, snow, and fluctuating temperatures without degradation.

Chain-link fencing may not offer the same level of privacy and safety as solid fencing options, but it does provide a clear boundary and can be equipped with privacy slats if desired. Its open design also allows wind to pass through easily, reducing the risk of fence damage during intense storms.

Special Considerations for Pennsylvania’s Climate

When choosing fencing materials in Pennsylvania, it’s essential to consider the state’s specific weather challenges. The state experiences hot, humid summers, cold winters with significant snowfall, and wet springs. These varied conditions can take a toll on fencing materials over time. Moisture resistance is a crucial factor to weigh. Materials like vinyl, aluminum, and galvanized steel excel in this area, resisting rot, rust, and water damage.

Temperature fluctuations are another consideration. Pennsylvania’s winters can see temperatures drop below freezing, while summers can bring heat waves. Steel and vinyl are particularly good at resisting these temperature swings without warping, cracking, or becoming brittle. The freeze-thaw cycle common during the winter can also cause the ground to heave, potentially affecting fence posts. When properly installed, materials like vinyl and steel are typically better at withstanding this ground movement than other options.

First let me say I do all the work on my house because I don't trust people to do the job correct. With that said my roof was leaking working on ladders (heights) is not for me. I called three roofers two gave me a estimate without putting a ladder up. 😂 One estimate was for a new roof.. which I didn't need. Bill came twice (with a ladder) >because of weather and also he wanted to get the correct plan together to fix the issue causing the leaks. Bill is very easy to communicate , also does what he says he is gonna do. After the job was done bill still texted me the next two times it rained, To check in on the roof and make sure I was happy. He cares about his work. I highly recommend bill, Thanks henry

Thanks again for all your hard work Bill. You’ve created a safe space for my parents on the ground floor and significantly reduced their fall risk. In the process a 5th bedroom and full bathroom were added to the footprint. Much appreciate the sweat that went into it. It wasn’t easy, but you came up with a plan that everyone liked, especially for the bathroom. Can’t really tell there was any work done, feels like it was always like this. Your craftsmanship is par excellence. Much appreciated! Peace

Bill is a godsend. After a series of unfortunate contractor mishaps, the only bathroom in my home was unfinished and I was beyond disenchanted. He came in and not only finished the job, but did so with the care, attention to detail, and professionalism I'd hoped to encounter earlier in my bathroom remodeling process. With a quick wit, he asked, "Why didn't you call me first?😊." Now, without any hesitation...Bill will be my first call for ANY home project moving forward. Bill is the GC you need. He is responsive/ timely, his work is high quality, and his fee is very reasonable. Don't start any project without him and his team. **Main Services: Plumbing, fixture installation (toilet, vanity, sink faucet, cabinet, rod, fixed incorrect tub spout), wall refacing/paint, custom trim), electrical (light installation).

Billy and his team did a tremendous job on our roof. We had a difficult situation that required significant work to entirely replace the roof and add support beams throughout the house. We’ve had no issues in three years now. Billy even came out during a terrible rain storm to make sure the tarps were on correctly. Highly recommend.
